See the narrow, cobbled streets, feel what makes Skopelos town so different from any other place on earth. You are comfortable at once, bygone days transported into the present. The main village or chora of Skopelos island is a functioning community, set on the hillside just above the main harbor. On the waterfront you find several cafes and restaurants, souvenir shops and always someone to be met.
Scolling down the page you find some pictures that might bring you into the mood to come to the island and experience this incredible enchantment by yourself, which the traditional houses in the narrow streets of Skopelos have to provide for everyone who just lets it happen...
The people as well as the authorities take care, that for building new and for the renovation of old houses - typically they have very thick stone walls of sometimes over 1 meter - stay with the old architectural style of the island. Building and renovation licenses are issued only if the plans are according to several guidelines. For example, only wood may be used for windows and doors, roofs can only be made of reddish roof tiles or roof slates in gray shades. Still there is much space for individual design.
The town stretches from the area of Kastro, the Venetian castle above the Old port, down to the waterfront and the harbor. Built on hills, one encounters several streets with romantic sequences of steps throughout the village, which the residents love to decorate with colorful flower pots.
