I have prepared some pictures of construction for you, of building a house on our Greek island, you probably know meanwhile, on the island of Skopelos!

The featured country house has been built during the years 2005-2007. It belongs to an Austrian/Greek couple who did a very good job creating this special house with modern and traditional features in the lush countryside of laid back Skopelos, the island they used for the successful musical, the Mamma Mia Movie.

Only selected high quality materials have been used, a symbioses of Austrian knowledge about insulation and Greek experience of earchquake safe building, to mention just two important attributes. The family home is for sale by owner, the ground floor can work as rental apartment for the summer season or all year round self catering holidays.

After our first summer season we worked in tourism on the island, we decided to buy land and build our dream house on this spectacularly lush spot with sea views from above and right at the island's best walking trails.

The vergin soil

Let me show you our pictures of construction, so you can follow the building process step by step.

The storage room is in the back of the house, not under, so there were not too much excavations needed to start building. After a good insulated concrete bed the columns are constructed, which build the skeleton of the house, the basis for an earthquake safe construction.

The brickwork is a process quicker than one might think. Although winters are very mild in Greece and there is not much rain in general, one should take care of using good material for the insulation of the house. It is good standard if you place polystyrene foam within two rows of bricks.

The columns shall also be covered with this insulation material, so the house won't suffer thermal bridges where different materials come in contact. There are more modern and natural materials on the market worldwide already, the difficulty on the Greek islands is, that you must use what the people here sell and know how to work with. Things are developing, though, just slowly, slowly as the Greeks like to state.

You must count with a considerable amount of work around the house. There are stairs to be made, streets and paths. For the stairs be sure and check, then check again, that each step will have the same height in the end, especially if not all floors are ready yet, you will need to be sure that the first and the last step will have the same height than all the others. Check again during the building process. On the second fotograph you can see how they worked on the path to the roof terrace.

Now the fine tuning could take place, many small and big decisions to be made, one can enjoy months of shopping experiences - if you like it that is. We definitely did and always searched as long for every little detail until we both liked it a hundred percent.
