Skopelos Island Greece - Our Island in the Sun
“What a gem!” I thought, when my husband and I arrived on our island in the sun in Port Agnontas, the second harbor of Skopelos island. We were at once impressed by the lush, green mountains, covered with pine forests and olive groves stretching until the deep blue Aegean Sea. Promising I found. And every day from that morning on, we have enjoyed so many beautiful angles of this truly amazing island in the Greek Sporades.

Where is their secret spot? Skopelos is well known and highly recommended by travelers from Athens and Thessaloniki. Skopelos Town
What a nice spot! Skopelos town is a functioning community within the most wonderful setting with narrow, cobbled streets on a hillside just above the main harbor. On the waterfront there are several cafes and restaurants, souvenir shops and always someone to be met. Foreigners are always welcome as the Skopelitians are simply curious about other people's lives. There is no local newspaper or notice board really, all information is passed on by word of mouth. Someone is interested in renting an apartment, buying a car? Tell it at the kiosk, the bakery, just tell it anyone you meet. Soon something will come up. Sure that requires you to be here, difficult to arrange things beforehand. Greece needs patience! This is really the big word here. One of the most used words should be "Avrio", which means "tomorrow". Of course this is just the translation; the meaning is "some when in near future". One point that makes living here so relaxing, nobody expects you to strictly follow up on appointments, you usually try to avoid those specific time schedules. Yes - Skopelos town. What makes it different from many other main towns of other islands in Greece is, that the society lives and is healthy, happy to have summer tourism, but not depending on it exclusively. In winter families stay in, coming together in front of their fireplaces and invite friends for dinner. The shops belong to locals and many stay open during winter time. Should you find one closed, you just meet the owner some day on the waterfront and ask him to get the key.

Just out of Skopelos town there are several monasteries to admire. Greek Orthodox Easter is an interesting time to be here. Everyone is concentrated on those days, where all families in Greece travel through the country to meet their relatives. The church is of importance to many Greeks, religious holidays throughout the year are attended with passion, name days are celebrated far more than birthdays.Whatever is planned for the summer season will be done just before Easter. The water front springs into life after a rather quiet winter, owners of the souvenir shops arranging their goods on display, the chairs and tables get a new paint, excitement on the faces about which people and what adventures the following summer is to bring.

Taking a holiday on Skopelos island, Greece
The Greek island of Skopelos, our island in the sun, lies in the Aegean Sea, to the north of Evia and the east of Pelion. It is one of the greenest islands in the Aegean with more than 50% of the island being covered with dense pine forest. Sunvil holidays offer lots of information and accommodation for you to find out about.
This wonderfully quiet island offers holiday makers a gentle relaxed holiday in a friendly atmosphere. With no airport of its own, Skopelos has avoided becoming over commercialized and is considered to be a little more upmarket and exclusive than many other Greek islands. There are splendid landscapes to enjoy and plenty of warm sunshine.
Accommodation on the island in the sun is available in many forms from hotels, to private villas with their own pools, guest houses offering full board or bed and breakfast, camp sites and studio apartments. This means there is something to suit every taste and budget.
With a rich and rugged coastline that runs for 67 kilometres around the island, you can expect to enjoy plenty of seaside fun here.
There are lots of beaches ranging from Milia, which is considered to be the most attractive beach on the island, to Velanio which has a large nudist section until up North to wild Perivoliou beach. Each beach has plenty of stunning warm waters to enjoy, and the seascapes here can be as beautiful as the landscapes.
Some of the locations used for the film "Mamma Mia" were shot right here on Skopelos, and many people enjoy seeking out these places. One well recognized spot is Kastani bay which was the setting for the song "Does Your Mother Know?". There is a website for your information about flight offers to get to this island in the sun, and a travel blog.
There are various sightseeing opportunities around the island. The main town of Skopelos with its narrow cobbled streets and small houses clustered close together with little churches that are beautifully looked after, and plenty of bougainvilleas to admire as you wander around. If you like to walk a little, you can climb up from the harbour to the castle at the top of town, where you can enjoy magnificent views over the island. Getting lost within the streets is not really possible, as if you just point yourself downhill and you’ll come to the port again. You will find a lovely and relaxed lifestyle.
At Peparethos you’ll find the oldest settlement on the island, as well as a Venetian castle which can be reached via steps that climb up from the Panagitsa tou Pirgou church by the Old port. Climb these to the summit and you will find Giorgos Xintaris’ tavern, a leading local expert in Rempetika music.
The Bishop Seat Episcope is a Venetian building which was designed to be the seat for the bishop. Sadly it was never completed because of the invasion of the island in 1538 by the pirate Barbarossa. However, in the late 16th century it was rebuilt and now stands proudly as a monument of the island. There are also some private vineyards around the island, and at the northern tip of the island stands a lighthouse which you may find interesting to visit. The romantic little chapel used in the film "Mamma Mia" you can visit in the North, going there you shall take a stroll through the beautifully authentic town of Glossa, the second largest of Skopelos, our green island in the sun.
